| Frank Sinkwich, number 21, was UGA's first Heisman Trophy winner in 1942. |
Georgia's first Heisman Trophy winner, Frank Sinkwich lead the 1942 Bulldogs to an 11-1 record, an SEC championship and a win over UCLA in the Rose Bowl. In his Heisman-winning season, Sinkwich rushed for 795 yards and 17 touchdowns and passed for 1,392 yards and 10 touchdowns. In his three-year career at Georgia (1940-42), the versatile tailback amassed 2,271 yards rushing and 2,331 yards passing. Sinkwich also recorded 60 touchdowns: 30 rushing and 30 passing. He was named an All-American in the 1941 and 1942 seasons. When accepting his Heisman Trophy, Sinkwich proudly wore his Marine uniform. Among the many noteworthy marks in his career, Sinkwich's 1941 season saw him set an SEC rushing record of 1,103 yards -- a mark that stood for eight years. That same season, his total yardage of 1,816 yards (he'd also passed for 713 yards) set a new SEC total-offense record. All this is even more impressive when noting that Sinkwich played from the third game on with a broken jaw in a protective mask! The 1941 season ended on New Year's Day 1942 with a 40-26 victory over TCU in the Orange Bowl. His performance in this game is still regarded as the greatest in any Orange Bowl: Sinkwich threw 13 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns, rushed for 139 yards including a 43-yard touchdown run. His combined yardage of 382 yards for the game set the Orange Bowl total offense record. Frank passed away on October 22, 1990.
